IAIDO

Iaido is the traditional art of drawing the Japanese sword (katana), cutting and then resheathing it. The skill of drawing the sword as quickly and efficiently as possible was a matter of life and death for the samurai. Over time it developed into an art form. Under the influence of Zen Buddhism, the samurai created the study of precise form with a state of intense concentration as a form of moving meditation.
The discipline of constant mindfulness, focusing on every detail of movement of the hands, feet, body and sword is a wonderful compliment to Aikido study as well as being a martial art in its own right.

Chiba Sensei saw Iaido as an integral part of his Aikido system. The clarity of movement and commitment which is characteristic of his style of Aikido is heavily influenced by Iaido training.
